18 May 1643

  • the said day James Forgisone, being warnit, for selling of aill in his house in tyme of divine service upon the Lord’s Day, wais callit, compearit, and was ordainit to pay a dollar and was actit not to doe the lyke in tymes coming under the penaltie of 10 £ as also to make his publick repentance
  • The said day Janet Shew, being warnit for the lyke fault, wais refered to pay 12ß; but efter that shee had done according to the said ordinance going out of the sessione shee misbehavit hir sellffe and abusit ye sessioner who had delatit hie, thereafter she was recallit and was ordainit to pay a dollar this day 8 dayes and actit ye partie offendit forgiveness in partie of the wholl sessione.

15 June 1643

  • Agnes Richardson being warnit (for reseaving Marie Seaton being wt child into hir house). Therefore was ordainit to present the said Marie to ye sessione when shee is weill (being for ye present in chyld bed lair) qlk shee promisit to doe, also hir sensour for resetting of the said Marie in hir house yr conteinneit to ye said tyme
  • The Bailyies are be ordainit to cause make Intimane throe ye towne with sound of drum that no ventenars of wyn, aill or bear sell any drink efter 10 hours at even vnder pain of 10 £
  • Refers Gilbert Moir to the baillies who held a ryotous house in drinking and dutchmen fighting yr in efter 10 hours at even

29 June 1643

  • Conteinus Jhone Broune ye bairne cautioner for James Gourlay in Saltprestone fornicator with Jonet Rosone and the said James his sensour till they both returned from ye sea
  • Ordaines the elders and deacons to visit yr quarters for searching of strangers and new in comers without Testimoniall
  • ordains Thomas Wood and James Petersone deacons to take true notice of the poor people who comes out of Irland and report yr names and their poore distrast estat, that they may be considered accordingly
  • Margt Barclay payit hir penaltie for hir vil and scandalous speaches abusing some workmen
  • James Alesone compearit (being warnitt for swearing horriblie) and also abusit the elder of our sessione who reprehendit him… he was ordainit to sit in the presence of the whole sessione and crave Gods mercie as also ye elder and payit 12 ß
  • ordains ye tresaurer to cause big up ye breaches in ye church yard dick ye easier may be can to hinder ye sheep and horse for incoming yrin, till the Tyme of Trubles be gone ordaines to pay the skippers ye 110 marks for bypast scool meall of the grammar scool and to take a new tak dewvo for 19 yeir

3 August 1643

  • ordains Thomas Wood, Henry Baftie and Neill Campbell to search the nixt Sabboth through ye towne efter noon to try who sells ather kaill carrots neips aples prune or such lyke and report

10 August 1643

  • Ordaines to make publick Intim_ne the nixt Lords Day that yr be no kind of fruit, caill, herbes, milke sold vpon ye Lord’s Day, under paine of ye Censour of the Sessione
  • Ordains Henry Christie church officer to keep ye church scyll and all the rest of ye gaites of the church yard fast and sticked, all tymes day and night except at preaching and prayeres, because ye people about and all maked a conteinuall passag there throw and abuse the same with yr filthe excrementes
  • Jhone Peibles warned (for selling of Tobbacco pypes in tyme of divine service vpon the Lords Day) compeared… ordainit to pay a dollar…actit vnder paine of 10 £
  • Jonet Reid compeared (being warned for abusing hir parents) and ordainit to beg forgiveness on knees
  • Referred Bessie Sympsone and Hobell Glaidstains to ballies for scalding and sweiring
  • Ord. all deacons of every quarter to bring their poor vpon Wed next to try if yr be any among them who may want yr pensione or not

  • Comperit Christian Snype for fornication… John Irving stands free cautioner for her until the session call for her

22 November 1655

  • Comperit Lendry Tondy, English soldier, who confessed to fornication with Christian Snype and is promised to take her away with him; John Irving is free from his caution
  • It was ordained that a note be given to Walter Borthink, ruling elder that he should speak to the ballie concerning David Shanks cautioner for his brother George Shanks who has still not given satisfaction for his fornication

29 November 1655

  • Comperit Isobell Thomson fornicator with John Thomson and was ordained to enter to her repentance
  • Walter Borthink reported that the ballies gave order to James Gray his officer to take David Shanks and James Makgill… he could apprehend them.
  • Walter Borthink declared that James Blair, tailor, had a marriage performed in his house; he is to appear in 8 days
  • James Menteith fornicator with Issabell Mathisone, received from the place of public repentance
  • Mart. Linneir confessed to being pregnant with another man’s child when she married her husband John Cranford; a child was born before before the marriage; she is to give satisfaction

27 December 1655

  • Mr. Alexander Henrysone reported that he was told by the father of Mart. Kinneir that John Cranford his son-in-law went away from his daughter years ago and that all they know of his death was by meeting ‘a young man’ in Glasgow who said that Cranford had been killed in Colraine, Ireland ‘but he had no testificate of it
  • Mr. Alexander Henrysone declarit that Issabell Littlejohn is with child to John Sledgor ‘living in James Menteitz her house’

3 Jan 1656

  • Mart. Kinneir who is with child to James Wallace…is ordained to send a letter to the minister of Colraine, Ireland and to get a testificate of her husband’s (John Cranford) death
  • Appeared John Makgnay who declared that Issobell Littlejohn had stayed in his house for 2 night, but that she went from him to the countrie but he know not what place, he is ordained to search for her and report to the session to this day 8 days
