ILIAD : LISTENING ASSIGNMENT #1

ILIAD5.Part07

We LISTENED to THE ILIAD 3.Part05 (Book Three) in class. The Greek army is now fighting towards the city of Troy. Achilles still refuses to fight and the Myrmidons (great fighters) are not in the battle because of this.

Book Three/Guiding Question 1: What do we learn about Hector and Alexandros (Paris) from this section?  Focus Questions:

  • What is the relationship between Hector and his little brother Alexandros (Paris)?
  • What role do the gods play in thwarting the plans of the two armies?

ASSIGNMNET BELOW (Turn in E to Mr. Seese.)

  1. LISTEN to ILIAD 5.Part07 (Book Five) but only to min.37:30 NOTE: the first 20 minutes or so is mostly accounts of battle. Don’t worry about keeping all the names straight, rather consider how this is important for the Greeks to hear. The last ten minutes contains some hefty ideas about leaders and man’s relationship to the gods.
  2. Keep READING NOTES, of course, organizing them by Book (section) so you can easily refer to any book when asked. Just focus on the sections assigned. NOTES should include:
    1. brief remarks on what is happening – the basics, not detailed
    2. any instance touching the values of KLEOS, MENIS, MOIRE, TIME
    3. QUOTATIONS that show the above values
    4. Questions or ideas that come to mind while listening
    5. If the Iliad is a kind of book of morality for men (i.e. it speaks of ethical behavior / how to act and how not to act), what is the lesson of Book Five? WRITE A SINGLE SENTENCE of the moral lesson of Book 5. (Moral according to ancient Greek values, not yours.)

IF you wish to read the section of the Iliad you are listening to, there is a link to the right (though it may be a different translation)
