Summer Suggestions

Summer Reading Suggestions (see REQUIRED READING above for assigned reading prior to the beginning of class)

Some preliminary reading is important especially if you have little or no knowledge of the Middle Ages. Reading even one of these will help you quickly transition to the pace of the course in September:

  • The Making of the Middles Ages by R.W. Southern
  • The Civilization of the Middle Ages by Norman F. Cantor
  • A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman

However, reading any narrative history of Europe during the years c.400-1300 will be a boon to your study of modern Europe.

BOOKS ON RESERVE AND SUGGESTED BOOKS FOR ADDITIONAL STUDY:

I will have a number of books placed in the library on special reserve, including study aids and alternate narrative textbooks that will help you study the core material.

  • What is History? by Edward H. Carr (on reserve now)
  • Modern European History by Birdsall s. Viault. (on reserve now) This is a great condensed reference book; especially good for content review.
  • Western Civilization Since 1300 by Jackson Spielvogel. (on reserve now) This is the old textbook. I have several copies that I will make available on reserve in the library.
