Hungary and Croatia

BUDAPEST

  • Coffee House Mucesz,
opened in 1898, the elegant, late Biedermeier interior evokes the atmosphere of the beginning of the 20th century and was frequently visited by the artists of the Opera House.
  • The Ruszwurm !  Great for a mid-afternoon cake and coffee stop.
  • The New York Cafe: considered one of the most beautiful coffee houses in the world.

It’s been a long time since I visited Croatia (it was Yugoslavia when I was there, if that gives you an idea!), and a war was beginning, but some elements endure.

SPLIT

Museum/Gallery of Ivan Meštrović – go for the spectacular view of the Adriatic and the city; stay for the deeply moving art. Address:  Šetalište Ivana Meštrovića 46, 21000, Split, Croatia. It’s an easy walk up the hill just west of the main port.

Cattredale di San Domino – built in 305! Enough said

Stari Grad and Hvar – these are on islands in the Adriatic; take a ferry from Split.

DUBROVNIC – one should enter this city as intended, BY SEA! Book the ferry service from Split.
