Assignment #5: Teaching Your Own Class

You now have the opportunity to direct a class of your own on a topic of your choice. You will all be scheduled for an upcoming week during the semester. Your topic should be about Europe and generally fall within the era we are covering. So the first up should choose a topic related to the late 17th or early 18th century. Please, no lewd or offensive topics – if you’re unsure, speak to me.

This assignment includes two components, one verbal , one written:

  1. Verbal: Lead a class on a historically significant topic of your own choice. You should plan on at least 30 minutes, though you will have up to 65 if it generates a good discussion. Blk5 will have two in one session. You may combine your presentations or lead an entirely separate session. The topic MUST be situated in the general era we are covering when you teach. This should be apparent two or so weeks out from the day. Talk to me if you’re confused.
  2. Written: Submit a brief statement that explains the educational goals of your class. What was the theme of your class and how did you intend to get the idea across? What information did you wish to import? What idea(s) did you wish students to take away from the lesson? How would you go about assessing what the students learned from your class? Please include a summary statement of your class; i.e. what was it all about? (Not a summary of the content, but rather a summary of theme, questions, and method.)

* Please, no video. And if you use a PowerPoint, please limit yourself to a few slides that enhance and support…  DO NOT simply write your notes in bullet points.
